Why America’s Favorite Breed Only Lives 4.5 Years 〰️
French Bulldogs historically have an expected lifespan of 11 - 14 years, however, a research paper in England (where the breed originated) published in 2022 (Tzu-yun Teng at al, Scientific Reports, 2022; https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-022-10341-6) found that French Bulldogs are now expected to only live an average of 4.5 years! How is this possible? Why does America’s favorite breed now have such a short life? This book will delve into the many health concerns of this newly popular breed which contribute to its new, shorter life expectancy. But, the short answer as to why Frenchies have such short life spans, is that French Bulldogs were simply bred to be absolutely adorable, and not to have good health.
This book is meant to educate Frenchie parents (and Frenchie parents-to-be) about this breed from an easy-to-understand medical perspective, and provide a brief nose-to-tail overview of some of the major health issues French Bulldogs are predisposed to because of their breeding history and anatomy. These are medical problems that all potential Frenchie parents should be aware of, and consider, before purchasing, or adopting, a French Bulldog. You should continue to monitor your fur babies for these issues throughout their life, and if any concerns arise, it is important to contact a veterinarian (Primary Care Veterinarian or Specialist Veterinarian) to see if veterinary intervention could improve your Frenchie’s quality, or length, of life.
